What Is Root Canal Treatment and How Is It Done?

Oral and dental health plays a critical role in daily life. Since teeth are essential for proper nutrition, any damage can lead to discomfort and negatively affect overall well-being. Toothaches may indicate various underlying dental problems; therefore, consulting a dentist at the first sign of pain is important.

Tooth pain can occur for different reasons, such as decay or trauma. Proper diagnosis and treatment are necessary to restore healthy teeth.

Tooth decay is one of the most common dental issues. When decay progresses deep enough to reach the pulp, root canal treatment becomes necessary. During this treatment, the pulp—containing nerves and blood vessels—is removed, the canals are cleaned, and then filled with appropriate materials.

This procedure allows the tooth to regain its function by sealing the root canals. Early diagnosis increases the likelihood of saving the tooth with the most effective treatment method.

How Is Root Canal Treatment Performed?

Root canal treatment is performed to restore damaged teeth to a healthy state. Infected tissues, nerves, and decayed areas inside the tooth are cleaned and disinfected. Then, the canals are filled with biocompatible materials.

The steps are as follows:

  1. Local anesthesia is applied to prevent pain during the procedure.
  2. The decayed or broken parts of the tooth are cleaned.
  3. After reaching the pulp chamber, the damaged nerves and tissues inside the root canals are removed.
  4. Medication is placed in the root to support healing.
  5. Finally, the disinfected canals are filled with suitable canal-filling materials.

Symptoms that may require root canal treatment include:

  1. Gum sensitivity
  2. Facial swelling from dental abscess
  3. Tooth discoloration caused by nerve damage
  4. Spontaneous tooth pain occurring without external triggers

For early diagnosis and protection of dental health, visiting your dentist every six months is recommended.

When Is Root Canal Treatment Necessary?

Root canal treatment is required when the pulp (tooth nerve) becomes damaged. Common causes include:

  1. Deep cavities
  2. Tooth fractures
  3. Trauma
  4. Incorrect or failed dental treatments
  5. Advanced gum disease
  6. Severe tooth wear
  7. Chronic inflammation or infection

If left untreated, infections may spread to the jawbone or surrounding tissues, leading to serious complications.

Root canal treatment fees vary depending on the tooth's condition and the complexity of the procedure.

What Should You Pay Attention to After Root Canal Treatment?

Since the treatment may take multiple sessions, the following precautions should be taken:

  1. Avoid eating or drinking until the numbness wears off.
  2. Do not consume firm, sticky foods such as gum or nuts until treatment is completed.
  3. Protect the temporary filling if one is placed.
  4. After treatment, avoid chewing on the treated side until sensitivity decreases.
  5. Do not bite hard foods like walnuts or hazelnuts with the treated tooth.
  6. Mild pain or swelling is normal for a short time, but if symptoms persist, contact your dentist.
