Gum Disease, Bleeding Gums and How to Save Your Teeth

9 December Tue, 2025

As an oral health specialist at Milim Dental Bursa, I often meet patients who are more afraid of root canal treatment and fillings than of the real “silent killer” in the mouth: gum disease. While cavities damage individual teeth, gum disease can slowly destroy the bone and tissues that hold all your teeth in place.

This article explains what gum disease is, how it is connected to bad breath and tooth loss, and what you can do at home and in the clinic to protect your smile.

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease starts when dental plaque – a sticky film of bacteria – accumulates around the teeth and gum line.

There are two main stages:

Gingivitis

Red, swollen gums

Bleeding when brushing or flossing

Usually no pain

Gingivitis is reversible with good cleaning and professional care.

Periodontitis

Plaque hardens into tartar (calculus)

Gums detach from teeth, forming “pockets”

Bone around the teeth is gradually lost

Teeth may become loose over time

Periodontitis cannot be cured completely, but it can be stabilised with proper treatment and maintenance.

Why Bleeding Gums Are a Warning Sign

Many people in Bursa see blood on their toothbrush and think, “I must be brushing too hard, I should stop brushing there.”

In reality, the opposite is usually true:

Gums bleed because plaque and bacteria irritate them.

Avoiding brushing that area allows more plaque to build up.

The inflammation worsens and bleeding increases.

At Milim Dental Bursa, we explain that bleeding gums are your body’s way of saying: “Please clean me better and get professional help.”

How Gum Disease Threatens Your Teeth

Advanced gum disease is one of the leading causes of adult tooth loss worldwide. As bone is lost, teeth lose their support and may:

Move or drift out of position

Become sensitive or painful when chewing

Eventually become so loose that extraction is the only option

Patients are often surprised when a tooth with no cavity needs to be removed because the bone around it is gone. That is why we say:

Fillings and root canal treatment save the tooth structure.

Gum treatment saves the foundation that holds teeth in place.

Basic Treatments for Gum Disease

At Milim Dental Bursa, gum therapy is tailored to the stage of disease:

Professional scaling and polishing to remove plaque and tartar above the gum line.

Deep cleaning (root planing) under local anaesthesia to clean the roots in deeper pockets.

Detailed home care instructions, including toothbrush type, interdental brushes and tongue cleaning.

If gum disease is very advanced, we may work together with periodontists or consider additional procedures. But the cornerstone is always meticulous cleaning – both in the clinic and at home.

Toothbrushes, Toothpastes and Gum Health

For inflamed gums, we usually recommend:

A soft or extra-soft toothbrush to avoid trauma but allow thorough cleaning.

Fluoride toothpaste for cavity prevention, sometimes combined with anti-inflammatory or antibacterial ingredients for short periods.

Interdental cleaning (floss, interdental brushes or water flossers) to reach the spaces between teeth where gum disease often starts.

Some patients ask about oil pulling for gum health. While oil pulling can help remove some debris, it cannot replace brushing with fluoride toothpaste or professional treatment. Think of it as optional, not essential.

Gum Disease, Bad Breath and Tongue Cleaning

Chronic bad breath is often linked to gum disease. Bacteria in gum pockets and on the tongue produce volatile sulfur compounds that smell unpleasant.

Our standard advice at Milim Dental Bursa includes:

Treating gum disease with professional cleaning.

Daily tongue cleaning (tongue scraper or soft brush).

Checking for other causes such as cavities, dry mouth or sinus problems.

Root Canal, Fillings and Whitening in Gum-Diseased Mouths

Before cosmetic procedures like teeth whitening, we always check gum health.

Whitening on inflamed gums can increase sensitivity and discomfort.

Fillings and root canal treatments in areas with active infection may have poorer prognosis if gum disease is not controlled.

That is why we often start any smile improvement plan with a full gum and oral health assessment, then address urgent needs such as deep cavities or root canal, and only then move to cosmetic procedures.

How You Can Help Save Your Teeth

To protect your gums and teeth, you can:

Brush twice a day with a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste.

Clean between your teeth once a day.

Clean your tongue gently to reduce bacteria and bad breath.

Avoid smoking, which is a major risk factor for gum disease.

Visit Milim Dental Bursa at least once a year (or more often if advised) for check-ups and professional cleaning.

Gum disease is a slow, silent process, but if you act early, you can keep your natural teeth for many years. By combining professional care with simple daily habits, you protect not only your smile, but your overall health as well.
